sharon and i sat in the viking union looking out the window down at the snow-covered seashore--the snow!covered!seashore!--wondering aloud about the color of shadows on snow. what is dark white?

those of us from Elsewhere restrained our laughter as the cops from Rainy Fortyfivedegreesinthewinter put chains on their tires to counteract the effects of the four inches of snow on the ground. some of the day's classes were cancelled.

the entire campus rang with shrieks and laughter as eighteen-to-twenty-two year old toddlers threw snowballs at each other and built elaborate snow sculptures.

i walked through the forest where cedars bowed to me, branches heavy with snow, and i thought it impossible to stand where i stood and continue to believe that the world turns on an axis of suffering, or even of indifference.
